Cycling on Hornby Island
Explore Vancouver, Denman and Hornby Islands by Bike and Boat
A jewel of an island, formed by eons of volcanic activity and tectonic pressure and nestled in the waters of the Pacific, offers tranquility and beauty to those intrepid travelers willing to leave the beaten track to seek it out. But it doesn’t require a passport or a week’s vacation time to discover this island paradise. A couple of days and a bicycle will do just fine.
Hornby Island is located in the Salish Sea, in the water off the east coast of Vancouver Island, not far from the towns of Courtenay and Comox. This year, Island Joy Rides, a local boutique bicycle tour company, is offering an unforgettable weekend getaway that includes exploring Hornby Island in the best possible way – from the seat of a bicycle.
Our tour begins on a Friday afternoon with a gentle introduction to your new two-wheeled steed and a ride around historic Cumberland before coasting down to your comfortable lodging at the Old House Village Hotel and Spa.
On Saturday, you’ll ride along the oceanfront to Baynes Sound, from where you’ll take the short ferry ride to Denman Island. You’ll pedal across this rural gem before catching another ferry to your destination. The rest of the day will see you cycling around Hornby, enjoying the natural beauty (you’ll love Helliwell Provincial Park) and the distinctive character of the island. There’ll be no need to retrace your route - a chartered water taxi will speed you back to your hotel in time for dinner!
Come Sunday morning you’ll be back on your bike, riding the quiet rural roads of the Comox Valley, burning just enough calories to deserve lunch at the Blue Moon Winery.
Island Joy Rides will look after everything so that you can simply enjoy your time on the islands. And with the Comox Valley Airport offering frequent and fast connections to Calgary and Edmonton and with Courtenay less than a 3 hour drive from Victoria, you can have a memorable adventure in a long weekend.
